Oh, hello [Jan. 14th, 2007|10:08 pm]
You know I said I was going to quit blogging, or something like that.

I lied.

I'm now back at http://garyandrews.wordpress.com

Thus ends the Public Service Announcement.

For about half an hour my gym eschewed its normal diet of dance remixes of the Kooks and other such chart artists (which is prescisely as bad as it sounds) and played Muse, My Chemical Romance and Panic At The Disco! followed by a bit of Amy Winehouse. It then swiftly reverted to form by playing some godawful dance remix of Savage Garden.

Clearly somebody slipped their CD collection on while the supervisor wasn't listening.

FFS... [Dec. 7th, 2006|02:27 pm]
Oh joy.

I thought my work wasn't doing a secret santa this year.

I was wrong.

So yet again I'm buying for somebody who I know nothing about. And I can't spend more than five pounds.

Honestly, what's the point of this practice? Everybody hates it... nobody ever gets good presents and, more to the point, I've already got all my Christmas shopping done.

Humbug.

Currently I'm working earlies. This means getting up at 4am but home but 1pm. This means I have time in the afternoons, so am tending to cook more. So far my housemates have experienced Honey Glazed Stuffed Butternut Squash, Roast Squash and Aubergene Lasagne, Leek, Mushroom, Pea and Parmeasan Risotto, Cream of Tomato and Butterbean Soup, and a stir fry that has no name but had plenty of asparagus in it.

My housemates will be happy with me remaining on earlier. I, however, would quite like to stay awake beyond 8pm.

Mini-festival [Nov. 12th, 2006|11:24 am]
Conversation with my houseamte the other night resulted in the question: Your get to organise a mini-festival. 10 bands on the bill. Who would you put on? Death, and splitting up isn't a problem.

Here's mine (from top of bill to bottom):

The Clash
Blondie
Beastie Boys
Blur
Basement Jaxx
Joni Mitchell
Orbital
Ian Dury & The Blockheads
Buena Vista Social Club
Eliza Carthy

Anybody else think that Torchwood, well, wasn't very good? I was a tad underwhelmed. Next week I'll watch it only if it's raining heavily outside.

In other news, has anybody heard of a group called Burial? Are they any good? I've read a few good reviews and they've been recommended to me, but I have no working speakers, so downloading is a little pointless.

Finally, the internet returns. Now I can use technology to speak to housemate downstairs to request the putting on of the kettle.

That is truly what computer networks are for. More efficient ways of making tea.

Trawling through the IKEA website and local press for furniture on a Sunday is incredibly fucking tedious indeed.

The drinker's lament [Sep. 2nd, 2006|11:51 am]
[Current Music |Nothing - my head can't take loud noise at the moment]

My head really really hurts. I feel rough as fuck. What I really need is a greasy fry-up. I'm never touching another drop again.

(Last assertation only valid until hangover wears off)

New band! Click. Download. Enjoy. [Aug. 25th, 2006|09:02 pm]
[Current Music |You, Me, Dancing - Los Campesinos!]

I'm not normally one of those who spend ages blogging about new bands they've discovered - I'm more likely to moan about how things were all done better ages ago and grumble away from my keyboard to put some Talking Heads on.

But I'll make an exception this time.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you.... Los Campesinos!

Ok, so a quick confession here. I do know Gareth, who's part of the band, although not very well. He started writing for the paper towards the end of my time there. I've not listened to any of their stuff before now as my speakers have been broken, and also because I had a nagging worry that they might not be particularly good. Over the years I've had various friends in various bands and I've never quite been able to say: "Yeah, I really liked your stuff" to them.

Well, not anymore. Los Campesinos! are utterly fantastic and I've not stopped listening to their tracks since downloaded them. It's made me think indie guitar music may have a future.

Incidentally, if anybody wants to to recommend me some stuff to download now I have working speakers it would be much appreciated.

100% TRUE JOURNALISM STORY [Aug. 25th, 2006|05:06 pm]
[Current Music |Wide Open Space - Mansun]

Bryan Ferry was recently quoted on his obsessive compulsive disorder. Apparently he won't drink tea or coffee out of anything but his favourite cup.

When pressed, Bryan said: "Love is the mug."

Ha! Take that deadline. [Aug. 13th, 2006|02:11 pm]
[Current Music |On Your Own - Blur]

Article done.

Weirdly enough it was exactly on the word limit. Not under, not over, not even by one little word, one superfluous 'that' or anything along those lines. I'm sure I could have cut it down further had I removed the small sentence about tea and coffee consumption. But that would just be stupid.

There, that wasn't difficult once I turned off the internet.

I'm so inspired I might go for a run later.

Yes, I said RUN.

I also said might.

How to be a writer part 243 [Aug. 13th, 2006|11:06 am]
New football season + desire to play Champ Manager again + football on TV + internet +flat needing tidying = mass procrastination on article with deadline of tomorrow.

Right, internet connection off. I'm never going to get this done.

The football can stay on the TV though.

I think I've just heard my single of the year during a rare foray into Zane Lowe's show.

Enuff by DJ Shadow featuring Q-Tip & Lateef The Truth Speaker. What an absolute tune. That new album has my name on the minute its released.

Is it shameful to like Paris Hilton's new single?

The girl herself I can't stand and have never had any time for. But I heard the song without knowing who it was and immediately thought it was a nice, breezy summer pop tune.

That and Ain't No Other Man seem to be on the radio constantly, and as pop goes, they're both pretty damn good.

Nice legs [Jul. 31st, 2006|11:10 pm]
[Current Music |Spirit - Lewis Taylor]

Now this is just bizarre. Somehow I've got signed up for a female model agency's mailing list. Whilst this gives me a wonderful insight into this world, I can't say I'll be following it up. Mainly because I have absolutely no idea what they're saying half the time. Modelspeak is like a foreign langauge.

I can think of half a dozen people who may have signed me up....

In other news, my computer is alive again.
